ADRIAN – Richard “Ric” Powell, age 77, of Adrian, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2010, at Bixby Medical Center.
Richard was born April 1, 1932, in Clayton, the son of Kenneth and Dorothy (Jones) Powell. He graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1950. During the Korean Conflict, Richard served in the Air Force.
On December 20, 1952, Richard married Bessie L. Martinson at the First Presbyterian Church in Adrian. They celebrated 55 years of marriage prior to her death in 2008.
After completing his training at Toledo Barber School, Ric worked for a barber for one year before purchasing the shop in 1957, which is still located on South Main Street. Because he enjoyed his work and loved his customers, Ric never retired.
Ric was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #97, the VFW Annis Fint Post #1584, and the Adrian Kiwanis Club. Ric was a Cub Scout Leader, a Little League Coach, and, for many years, helped with the chain gang at Adrian High School football games. He was a member of the Adrian Public Schools Board of Education and served as President. Ric and Bessie enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas over the years. Ric also enjoyed horse racing. An active Grandpa, Ric enjoyed watching his grandson play sports, his granddaughters’ dance recitals and soccer, and his great granddaughter’s dance recitals.
Surviving Ric are his children, Pamela Frankenberger and her husband, Michael, of Mason; and Michael Powell and his wife, Kaye, of Rochester; four treasured grandchildren, Michelle (Duane) Rowe, Patricia Frankenberger, and Melissa and Rick Powell, a great granddaughter, Olivia Huffer; sister, Norma (Jim) Scott of Florida; sister-in-law, Gloria Alexander of W. Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Powell and a sister, Marilyn Miller.
The funeral service for Ric will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church with Reverends James and Kathleen Splitt officiating, and military honors conducted by the VFW Annis-Fint Post #1584. Burial will be private. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. You may also send condolences to the family at www.wagleyfuneralhome.com.
