Obituary:
ADRIAN – Dr. Lothar E. Geipel, age 82 of Adrian, passed away Monday, March 23, 2009 at Bixby Medical Center. Lothar was born January 28, 1927 in Joliet, Illinois, the only son of Walter and Frieda (Stoehr) Geipel. Lothar served his country in the US Army Air Corps weather service as an observer and forecaster. After graduating from high school in LaGrange, Illinois, Lothar continued his education at the University of Illinois where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He received both his Master of Science degree and PhD in Chemistry from the University of Iowa. On May 31, 1958, Lothar married Mariene E. Metcalf in Santa Rosa, California. Mariene and Lothar celebrated 46 years of marriage prior to her death in 2005. Lothar moved his family to Adrian to work as a scientist for Stauffer Chemical for many years. He also did consulting for Faraday. Lothar was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Adrian where he served on the property committee, as a deacon, and was an active member of the Men’s Group and the Prayer Group. He was also a member of the Society of the Sigma Xi and Phi Lambda Upsilon Chemical Society. Lothar is survived by two daughters, Erika (David) Tutwiler of Riverside, CA and Lisa Rickaby of Adrian; and ten grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan and Lynse Rickaby, Nicole, Matthew, Benjamin and Heidi Schoepf, and Joshua, Bethany and Rebekah Tutwiler. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Esther Geipel and Ruth Hendley. The funeral service for Lothar will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 27, 2009 at Wagley Funeral Home with Pastor Thomas Oxtoby officiating. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Annis Fint Post #1584. Friends may visit Lothar’s family at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the service.
